route choices - SPOILER WARNING
Hollow Knight spoilers under the cut! HK has a number of choices you can make during gameplay, many of which have different implications for the finer points of the knight's personality and some of which influence which ending you get. Since my memory is hot trash I'll be noting what choices they made under the cut.
Saved Zote, completed his questline, and defeated Grey Prince Zote four times (bye, Bretta.)
Had Cloth's help during the Traitor Lord fight
Banished the Grimm Troupe
Has obtained the Hunter's Mark (filled out the entire bestiary, which requires killing several optional NPCs- they got both the maggots and Menderbug)
Killed Myla
Did not kill the Nailsmith (Happy couple achievement!)
Has completed the Path of Pain
Completed up through Pantheon of the Knight (P4) in Godhome;
Has obtained all powerups, skills, masks, charms, etc. (This includes Void Heart)
Gave Elderbug, Oro, and Godseeker Delicate Flowers (along with the Traitor Lord's daughter)
Ascended the Seer
Completed the Sealed Siblings ending, which they are taken from.
tl;dr this is a VERY CURIOUS CHILD who maybe went a little too far in their frustrated desire to understand everything going on, before realizing they maybe had some regrets about the approach they were taking (and indeed that there were other approaches they could take). They started going for Godhome ending, only to run into the Pure Vessel at the end of P4 and get shaken by it badly enough to nyoom straight back for the Dream No More ending... and then, at the wrong moment, they hesitated.
This is partially based off of my own "unideal" 112% completion file, and partially off of the incredible animatics "Charles" and "Beast's Thread Monopoly," which I wanted to offer some sort of tribute to.
